When using the T9 method of texting, how can I select a different word?

when i try to type a word like home, it comes up as good. my friend can change it. i believe i should be able to for it is a newer phone but a different company. mines samsung. his is lg i think. i have the samsung sync. what on do i press to change the word to a different word comprised of those possible letters (ex. instead of good i would like home)?
