Why did morale decline during the Vietnam war?

There was no clear answer to the question "Why are we in Vietnam?" Furthermore, there was no answer to the question "How are we going to get out?" When it was clear that the Gulf of Ton Kin incident was a lie few Americans were willing to believe any subsequent government pronouncements.
