A good phone for a kid?

My cousin is erm... 11 and a half. For the last year he has been pestering his folks for a phone. When They died of frustration he turned to ask me instead. So I'm wondering what I should get him. He does not want any firefly stuff . I have a old brick sitting somewhere is that a good idea?
